What the experts say about psychology in the USA

  • Profile of Dr Kaye Cook
    Dr Kaye Cook
    Dr Kaye Cook says:

Psychology is broad and deep. It helps one to prepare for a range of fields that require teamwork, leadership, and a depth of knowledge that can be applied in multiple work and life contexts. It is pivotal, for example, for education, technology, politics, and parenting, as well as counseling.

We are a small college that dreams big. We try to care for students who are far from home while at the same time helping them discern their calling and providing a high-quality education that prepares them for their chosen career.

A psychology degree is increasingly recognized worldwide because the needs are great. For example, currently, we are experiencing the greatest dislocation of individuals from their homelands because of war, poverty, and climate change. The world desperately needs people with psychological sensitivities and trained in psychological constructs who are able to contextualize their knowledge in culture.

Career prospects are strong in most countries, based on our experiences with students who have returned home. We have students placed in high positions in education, counseling, and government, to name a few. We are always glad to write recommendations and help alumni find jobs in whatever way we can.
  • Profile of Dr Tara Mitchell
    Dr Tara Mitchell
    Dr Tara Mitchell says:

Even if students do not major in psychology, taking psychology courses is beneficial, as psychology teaches students critical thinking skills, which are important in all careers and in life. It also teaches skills that help people work well together and form stronger relationships.

Studying in the US is beneficial due to the diversity that international students can encounter, not just in terms of people, but subjects to study, ideas, and geography. International students, particularly those that use school holidays to travel, will be exposed to a wide range of places, people, and ideas.

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior, thought, and feelings. Although many see psychology simply as offering therapy, it is more than that. International students who wish to become therapists would do well with a degree in psychology, but psychology also allows students to learn how to become better teachers, better parents, better business people, and better citizens. It teaches them to be critical thinkers, a skill that all need. Career prospects do depend on the type of degree and the area of specialization in psychology that a student pursues. Career prospects increase if the student pursues an advanced graduate degree (master's degree or doctorate). However, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, careers involving psychology are expected to grow faster than the national average. In addition, because psychology teaches critical thinking and collaboration skills, employers in fields outside of psychology often hire graduates with a bachelor's degree in psychology. As a result, the career prospects are good.
