Kinesiology degrees abroad

Kinesiology is the academic study of the human body and its movement. It combines concepts and principles from other disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and psychology.

As a kinesiology student, you’ll work towards understanding how movement affects human health and wellbeing. You’ll examine everything from the mobility of elderly people to the performances of elite sports performers. You’ll also put theory into action by practicing hands-on therapies and treatments.

By earning your kinesiology degree abroad, you’ll see how peoples’ perceptions of the human body are influenced by their cultural surroundings. Although the basic mechanics of human movement remain constant across the globe, the way this knowledge is taught and applied differs greatly. You’ll gain a global understanding of the field, explore new locations, and make fantastic memories.

Kinesiology program structure

Kinesiology can be studied as an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree. By studying an associate degree over two years, you’ll have a solid foundation in the subject field. These kinds of programs are a useful stepping stone into entry-level employment or further study on a bachelor’s program.

A BSc is studied over three or four years, depending on where you choose to study. Many universities will encourage you to undertake a placement year so that you can apply what you’ve learned to real-life scenarios.

If you’re still eager to learn more after finishing your bachelor’s, you can choose to enroll in a postgraduate program. After studying a master’s over one or two years, you can progress onto a PhD course which typically takes five years to complete.

Kinesiology programs are usually taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, hands-on laboratory sessions, and one-to-one tutorials. You’ll probably be assessed through a combination of exams, essays, presentations, and practical assessments.

What’s covered on your kinesiology program will change depending on your university and country of study. Each institution will offer different elective modules to reflect its faculty’s interests and strengths. However, most will address the following core topics:

  • Biomechanics
  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Nutrition
  • Principles of rehabilitation
  • Athletic injuries
  • Motor skills development and control
  • Assessment methods for kinesiology
