Psychotherapy degrees abroad
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, helps patients to manage their emotional difficulties and mental health issues. By enrolling in a psychotherapy program, you’ll develop the theoretical knowledge and professional skills needed to begin a rewarding career.
You’ll study key psychological theories and approaches, before applying them to real-world problems. You’ll learn how to establish therapeutic relationships with patients so that they can make sense of their emotions and modify their destructive behaviors.
Studying abroad is a chance to witness the effects of different cultural environments on human thoughts and behaviors. Working with patients from a diverse array of backgrounds and trying new treatment techniques will transform you into a more knowledgeable and versatile practitioner.
Psychotherapy program structure
BSc degrees in psychotherapy last between three and four years, depending on where you study. They introduce you to key theories and practices in psychotherapy and serve as a great springboard into further study.
To practice professionally, you’ll need a postgraduate degree. You can study for a master’s as a full or part-time student. Most master’s programs last between one and three years, combining classroom instruction with clinical placements.
PhD programs in psychotherapy are generally more research-focused. They take a minimum of four years to finish, but some can last up to six or seven.
You’ll learn through a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, and workshops. A large portion of your time will be spent undertaking supervised training too.
The content of psychotherapy programs differs from institution to institution, but most courses cover these fundamentals:
- Introduction to psychotherapy
- Becoming a psychotherapist
- Professional practice skills
- Theoretical approaches in psychotherapy
