Physiology degrees abroad

Physiology is the academic study of bodily functions. Cells, tissues, organs, and systems are put under the microscope so that students can piece together the intricate workings of the whole body.

As a physiology student, you’ll build a solid understanding of physiological processes and principles. Taking classes in areas like cell biology, biochemistry, and nutrition will prepare you for an array of scientific careers. You’ll also examine how the body responds to injury and disease, and evaluate the effectiveness of contemporary medicine.

Physiology program structure

Bachelor’s degrees in physiology last a minimum of three years, but some may require four years of full-time study. Lots of BSc programs encourage students to complete placements years as part of their course. These are a valuable way to gain industry experience and sample future careers.

Undergraduate programs in the US follow the four-year liberal arts model. Before opting to major in physiology, you’ll be expected to take two years of general education classes.

Master’s degrees in physiology are widely available and are a great option for students hoping to launch a career in teaching or research. You’ll narrow your focus and specialize in a particular branch of physiology over one or two years.

If you’re interested in conducting your own academic research or earning a lectureship, you’ll probably need to consider pursuing a PhD. Doctorate degrees normally take between four and six years to complete.

You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, and laboratory sessions. Module offerings differ between universities, so no two programs will be identical. However, most courses will cover these fundamentals:
