What the experts say about liberal arts in the USA

    Dr Graeme Douglas Bird says:

The liberal arts, also known as the humanities, are what help us understand what makes us human: our history, our literature, our language, our culture, our beliefs, our emotions, and many other things.

As well as studying the humanities academically, international students are able to meet and get to know people of many different backgrounds and cultures and to experience the wonderfully rich diversity of life in America. In this way, students also gain a broader understanding of the world as a whole.

Within the liberal arts, I specialize in the subject of Linguistics. This is the study of language, not one particular language, but an exploration of how human language works, and how individual languages show both differences and similarities.

International students get to see how their own languages fit into the larger family of world languages, and how language can affect and influence culture, politics, and history.

A degree in Linguistics in the USA can be used in many different ways, including as a way of continuing to graduate school, but also in various careers: teaching, particularly teaching students whose first language is different from the primary language of the school; speech pathology, which involves helping people who are suffering from speech loss or disability; also jobs in publishing and editing, translating and interpreting, journalism, and many more.

Learning language, writing, literature, and culture as part of your classes and as part of your life gives you a deeper understanding of all of them. The American approach to higher education allows you to study subjects beyond your major, offering you the opportunity to develop your own unique perspective in your chosen field of study and beyond.

In the United States, it's expected that graduates with degrees in English will go on to excel in careers in a wide variety of fields because of their ability to read, write, and think both creatively and analytically.

The United States contains a world of heritages and a wide variety of cultures, all united by a common language, plus many others. The opportunities for travel within the country provide you with a wealth of environments and cultures to choose from.

Studying at Lock Haven University, in particular, allows you to experience genuine American small-town life while positioning you about three hours from New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Niagara Falls, and Washington, D.C. American higher education offers you the opportunity to study multiple fields at once as part of your education, which helps you become a more creative and innovative thinker. Here, students are expected to talk to their professors, and learning and sharing of ideas take place both in class and during office hours. An American education prepares you to become a leader, especially when you choose a college or university known for its small classes and individual attention. A degree in English opens up a world of possibilities to anyone with an interest in working in fields requiring both creative and analytical thinking, a broad knowledge of humanity, sensitivity to a wide variety of cultures, and excellent communication skills. With a semester or year of living and studying in the United States, your ability to read, write, speak, and think in English will be greatly improved, making your career prospects in any field, especially those involving intercultural communication, much greater.
