Advertising degrees abroad

At its core, advertising is the promotion of a product, service, or idea to an audience. It’s a far-reaching subject which includes elements marketing, business, copywriting, psychology, visual design, and communication.

As an advertising student, you’ll explore various theories of advertising, consumer behaviors, and promotional methods and techniques to gain an in-depth understanding of the field. You’ll use your knowledge to design, roll out, and evaluate original advertising campaigns.

By studying abroad, you’ll see first-hand how some of the world’s most successful businesses advertise across borders. You’ll uncover and adopt new advertising strategies and gain a greater appreciation of how campaigns are tailored to specific cultural audiences. You’ll network with professionals, accelerate your employability, and have the adventure of a lifetime.

Advertising program structure

Advertising can be studied at various undergraduate and graduate levels, from associate degrees to doctoral qualifications.

A two-year associate degree will give students an introduction to the field and prepare them for entry-level employment or further study. A bachelor’s degree usually takes three or four years to complete and provides students with a comprehensive understanding of advertising.

If you want to begin your career in management or academia, you’ll probably need to complete a postgraduate qualification with a narrower focus. An MA usually takes one or two years to finish, whilst a PhD takes around five years of study.

Most advertising programs are taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, and visits to industry experts. You’ll likely be assessed through a combination of written exams, essays, reports, presentations, team projects, and creative portfolios.

Although every advertising program will be slightly different, most programs share similar modules, including:

  • Introduction to advertising
  • Advertising and promotion
  • Campaign planning
  • Brand management
  • Direct and digital marketing
  • Consumer behavior
  • Marketing research insights
  • Contemporary issues in advertising
