Electrical Engineering degrees abroad
Electrical engineering, often referred to as electronic and electrical engineering, is concerned with the technology and application of electricity. It impacts nearly every aspect of our lives, and as an electrical engineer you could find yourself at the cutting edge of new technologies and electronic innovations.
As the world becomes more reliant on sustainable energy and electric vehicles become more common, the demand for electrical engineers will only increase. Most programs require you to have good grades in subjects like maths and physics, and computing and programming skills are also an advantage.
Choosing to study electrical engineering abroad means you’ll be able to access the best programs and the universities with the best facilities. It’s also a chance to experience a new culture, improve your language skills and choose a country that offers the best electrical engineering career prospects after graduation.
Electrical Engineering program structure
The structure of each electrical engineering program will be determined by the university, but most will cover the same core areas.
At undergraduate level you can study electrical engineering as a BSc, BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) or MEng (Master of Engineering). The MEng combines a bachelor’s and master’s, and it’s possible to study a BEng and choose to convert it to an MEng after the first year if you have achieved the necessary grades.
Bachelor’s programs usually last between three and five years, and a separate master’s (MSc) will take one or two years. You can also study for a PhD degree if you have your master’s, and they can take up to four or five years to complete.
Electrical engineering programs are taught through lectures, small group seminars and practical laboratory work. You will spend a lot of your time developing your practical skills in laboratory sessions which will reinforce the concepts you learn in lectures.
Most programs will assess you through a combination of exams, coursework and presentations. You will also have a research project to complete in the final year of your program.
