Automotive Engineering degrees abroad
Automotive engineering is the study of how vehicles work, and how they’re designed, built and maintained. A degree in automotive engineering will give you a good understanding of engineering science, and how it is applied to the development of automobiles.
It’s an ideal choice if you have a passion for cars, are interested in how the work, and how they can be improved. The drive towards making vehicles safer, cleaner and more sustainable means that talented automotive engineers have the chance to be at the forefront of a rapidly changing industry.
Choosing to study automotive engineering abroad is a great way to access the best programs and facilities. It can also expose you to a range of industry opportunities where you can get hands on experience at some of the world’s biggest automotive businesses.
Automotive Engineering program structure
Some programs include a study abroad or placement year, which is usually taken in the third year of an undergraduate degree.
You can study a BSc, or BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) in automotive engineering at undergraduate level. You may also have the option to convert a BEng to an MEng (Master of Engineering) if you have achieved the necessary grades. You usually have until the end of the second year to transfer to an MEng, and it means you’ll study for an extra year and earn a master’s level degree.
Bachelor’s programs usually last between three and five years, and a separate master’s will take one or two years. You can also study for a PhD degree if you have your master’s, and they can take up to four or five years to complete.
The precise structure and content of an automotive engineering program will differ depending on the university you apply to. In some programs you will spend the first one or two years learning the foundations of mechanical engineering, whereas others will focus on automotive topics from the start.
