Engineering Technology degrees abroad

Engineering technology is the application of engineering techniques and concepts. Whilst mainstream engineers mainly use mathematical and scientific principles to come up with engineering ideas, it is the role of technologists to turn these ideas into reality.

As an engineering technology student, you’ll be tasked with producing, testing, analyzing, and evaluating engineering projects. You’ll use your skills to solve problems and improve productivity across a wide range of activities and machinery.

Studying engineering technology abroad is a fantastic way to develop professionally and personally. You’ll network with world-class researchers, learn in state-of-the-art facilities, and have the opportunity to complete internships with multinational companies. Alongside all of this, you’ll explore the world and make lifelong friends.

Engineering Technology program structure

Engineering technology can be studied at various undergraduate and postgraduate levels. By studying a two-year associate degree, you’ll graduate as an engineering technician - this means you’ll have to work under the supervision of an accredited engineer. If you study a four-year BSc program, you’ll be recognized as an independent technologist as soon as you graduate.

Once you’ve finished your bachelor’s, you can go on to gain a master’s in engineering technology over one or two years of study. Following this, a PhD lasting between four and seven years will allow you to research a very specific area of engineering technology.

Engineering degrees are famous for their high number of contact hours. You’ll probably be taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, and hands-on lab work. Assessment will usually take the form of written exams, coursework, presentations, and practical projects.

Each country and university will specialize in different aspects of engineering technology, meaning programs will vary worldwide. However, most will share some core modules and electives. Here are some of the areas you can expect to study:

  • Engineering principles
  • Engineering mathematics
  • Engineering professional skills
  • Design and materials
  • Fundamentals of computer design and engineering
  • Practical and experimental skills
  • Multiple technology projects
