Medical Engineering degrees abroad
Medical engineering examines how engineering principles and practices can be used to assess and improve human health. It’s a relatively new area of study that combines elements of biology, medicine, engineering, mechanics, mathematics, and design.
You’ll develop a detailed understanding of both engineering processes and the human body. You’ll learn about the vital role engineering plays in medicine and track the contributions made by medical engineers over time. You’ll also assist with pioneering research and development in the field.
By earning your degree overseas, you’ll see first-hand how engineering is helping to solve medical problems all over the world. You’ll network with international professionals, boost your employability, and make memories to last a lifetime.

Medical Engineering program structure
There are plenty of options to choose from when studying medical engineering. At the undergraduate level, universities offer a three-year bachelor of engineering degree (BEng). Most universities will also encourage students to complete an additional year-long industrial placement to gain hands-on experience in the field.
If you’re looking to advance your employability by achieving a postgraduate qualification, you can opt to study a four-year integrated master’s course (MEng). These programs cover mostly the same content as the BEng in the first two years, before delving into more specialist medical engineering topics in the final half of the program.
If you’re still eager to learn more after finishing your MEng, then you can enroll in a research-based PhD program. Doctorate degrees take an average of five years to finish.
Medical engineering degrees provide students with a sound theoretical and practical understanding of the field. As such, you’ll be taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and laboratory sessions. Some universities will also organize guest presentations from industry professionals and field trips to medical engineering sites.
The exact content of medical engineering programs will depend on your university and country of study. However, most courses will cover these core areas:
- Medical engineering in action
- Medical science
- Thermodynamics
- Electrical engineering
- Engineering materials
- Human anatomy and physiology
- Biomechanics
- Biomaterials
