Studio Art degrees abroad

Studio art, or fine art, refers to the creation and academic study of visual art forms, including painting, drawing, sculpting, photography, illustration, ceramics, glass, and printmaking. It’s a subject that combines theory, practice, and critical reflection.

A degree in studio arts will equip you with the creativity, imagination, and individuality needed to become an established artist. You’ll experiment with a range of techniques, equipment, and media to produce original and thought-provoking pieces. You’ll draw upon research and theory to develop an appreciation of how your work, and that of other artists, is framed by social, historical, cultural, and political contexts.

By studying abroad, you’ll see first-hand how different cultures and countries have expressed their identities through art over time. You’ll visit international galleries and will be inspired by new techniques and styles that will enrich your own practice. You’ll build a culturally-diverse portfolio, learn from local artists, and come to understand the global power of art.

Studio Art program structure

There are plenty of options when it comes to studying studio art. Two-year associate degrees offer a comprehensive introduction to the subject and are a great launchpad into entry-level employment or further study.

The most popular course of study is a bachelor’s degree, which is studied over three or four years. Students have the choice of either a BA or a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree. A BA program typically combines studio art with liberal arts modules, whereas a BFA is a pre-professional degree that is solely focused on studio art modules.

After completing your bachelor’s, you might choose to pursue a postgraduate qualification. At the graduate level, courses become more research-focused and less practical. An MA can be studied over one or two years, followed by a PhD which takes roughly five years to finish.

You’ll spend a significant amount of your study time getting hands-on in art studios. However, you’ll also attend lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, and critical group discussions. You’ll be assessed mainly through your portfolio of work, but you’ll complete research projects, essays, critical reflections, and presentations too.

The topics covered in your studio art degree will depend on your university and country of choice. However, there are some core areas that you can expect to encounter, including:

  • Introduction to fine art
  • Technical skills for artists
  • Modernism and avant-gardes
  • Postmodernism
  • Reflective practice
  • Contemporary art theory
