Veterinary degrees abroad

As a veterinary student, you’ll learn about the medical health and wellbeing of animals. The subject is incredibly broad and gives students an extensive insight into the diagnosis and prevention of animal diseases, injuries, and disorders.

Veterinary degrees are very hands-on and diverse, making them perfect for students that prefer to learn in different ways. Students will have countless opportunities to encounter and interact with a vast range of animals during their studies.

Studying for a veterinary degree can be very rewarding, especially if you’re passionate about animals. In addition to learning how to keep animals happy and healthy, you'll also learn practical skills to help and improve the lives of their owners and carers.

Veterinary program structure

Veterinary courses can be studied at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The duration of programs can vary largely depending on the country you study in and the university you choose to attend.

Generally, undergraduate veterinary courses usually take four years to complete. Veterinary master’s qualifications can be completed in one or two years. The duration of doctoral programs tends to be around three to five years.

Veterinary degrees are taught through a range of formats. Veterinary students can expect lectures, group projects, laboratory sessions, and practicals. Students may also have the opportunity to do a placement to help them gain experience in a real-world veterinary setting.

Course modules tend to differ between universities and countries, but students can typically expect to study topics like:

  • Neurology
  • Animal behavior
  • Cardiovascular and respiratory systems
  • Infectious diseases
  • Animal husbandry and welfare
  • Clinical pathology
  • Breeding and fertility
