Study nutrition abroad
An in-depth guide to studying nutrition as an international student.
Nutrition degrees abroad
Nutrition is the study of the nutrients in food and the impact they have on the health and well being of the human body. It also looks at social issues that influence the way we eat, as well as food production and food safety.
As the subjects of diet and healthy living become more and more important in modern society, now is a great time to study nutrition abroad. There are a wide range of nutrition degrees you can study overseas, at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels.

Nutrition program structure
If you’re thinking about studying nutrition abroad it’s well worth looking at each program’s structure and curriculum to see what’s covered.
Most nutrition degree courses include several optional or elective modules and classes you can choose. These allow you to tailor your program in a way that best suits your interests and career aspirations.
You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, group tutorials and you’ll also be expected to do a lot of independent study. Most programs are assessed through exams and coursework, including a research project or dissertation in your final year.
The content of every program is likely to be different, especially between different countries, so check to make sure the course covers what you expect it to before you apply. Modules and subjects you can expect to study include:
- Nutrition physiology
- Nutrition science
- Chemistry/biochemistry
- Metabolism and nutrition
- Foundations of psychology
- Nutrition research methods
- Kinesiology
- Nutrition and society

Nutrition programs are offered all over the world, so you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to deciding where to study. To help you make the right decision, think about:
- Where you want to live
Consider things like the language, culture and climate when deciding where to study. Also think about whether you’d prefer to live in a city, suburban or rural area.
- Where you want to work*
If you want to work after your studies, look at which countries have the best career prospects for nutrition graduates. Also look at the work visa requirements to make sure you could easily work there after graduation.

If you want to study on a highly ranked nutrition program, base your decision on which universities have a good reputation for the subject and cover the areas that you’re interested in.

To work out which university is right for you, look at the nutrition programs each offers and consider things like:
- What areas of nutrition the program focuses on
- What teaching methods are used, and how the program is assessed
- What student life at the university is like, e.g. does it offer campus accommodation and student clubs and societies?
Although the reputation and quality of the program is important, it’s also worth thinking about these things when deciding which university you want to study at.

Nutrition study abroad programs
You can study nutrition abroad at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Most undergraduate nutrition degrees are offered as a BSc, but there are BA nutrition programs available.
There is little difference between the two, but a BA will usually involve fewer science based modules like chemistry or statistics. Undergraduate degrees in nutrition usually last either three or four years full time, depending on where you study.
At graduate level you can study a master’s degree in nutrition, which can last between one and two years. If you want to study a terminal degree you can study for a PhD in nutrition, provided you have already achieved a master’s. These can take at least four years to complete.
