What the experts say about philosophy in Canada

  • Headshot of Dr Iva Apostolova
    Dr Iva Apostolova
    Dr Iva Apostolova says:

Dominican University College (DUC) offers the full range of degrees in philosophy and theology, in both Canada's official languages. Both disciplines are taught with an emphasis on their histories, an essentially European approach to higher education.

Philosophy is a fundamental discipline teaching us about the world and humanity's place in it, while at the same time challenging one's preconceived notions. Philosophy has had theology as its dance partner for a significant portion of its historical development, and as such, at DUC we believe we offer access to the two most essential disciplines that open the door to the rest of the humanities.

Canada has one of the most beautiful and well preserved natural landscapes in the world. It offers access to the outdoors all year round. Canada scores routinely in the top 5 of the world's best places to live.

Canadians are known for their open-mindedness, friendliness, and progressive thinking reflected in its legislative and immigration policies. At the same time, Ottawa, with its four universities, two of which are some of the biggest in the country, has been voted the city with the highest level of education per capita, and one of the highest standards of living in the world.

With a 1:7 professor to student ratio, we pride ourselves in being thorough, meticulous, and research-driven in our pedagogical methodology, while at the same time, maintaining a hands-on approach in coaching our students to succeed inside and outside the classroom. One should also not forget that as a bilingual institution located in a bilingual city, DUC offers the opportunity to learn another language (English or French) and practice it on a daily basis with both native and non-native speakers. Our undergraduate and master's students often choose careers in either law or civil service, both of which require strong analytical skills and training in ethics. Another popular and natural career path for our undergraduate students is teaching at elementary and secondary school levels. Our Doctoral students aim at staying in academia, both in Canada and US, or choose the path of working for government and non-government funded research institutes.
