Information Technology degrees abroad
Information technology (IT) degrees give you in-depth training in how to design IT systems, and you’ll learn about things like web development, information systems foundations and IT infrastructure.
It’s one of the most popular subjects for international students to study overseas, with thousands of students choosing to study computing degrees abroad every year. It’s an exciting field that offers graduates strong career options with nearly all employers in need of talented IT experts.
Choosing to study an information technology degree abroad means you’ll be able to choose from some of the best programs in the world. You can also take advantage of new technologies and approaches that you might not find at home, all while improving your language skills and experiencing a new culture.

Information Technology program structure
IT degree programs are available at all levels including bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate. Programs can be defined differently by different universities; for example, some may use the name computer science to refer to information technology degrees, so it’s important to look at the course content before you apply to make sure it’s right for you.
At undergraduate level you can study a bachelor’s as a BSc, which will take three or four years to complete. As a graduate you can study for an MSc, which usually takes one or two years. If you want to continue your education after a master’s, you can study a PhD in IT, which can be completed in between two and four years.
You’ll be assessed through a combination of exam papers, written coursework and project work. Teaching will be mainly through lectures, computer lab work and small group seminars with close support from personal tutors. Many programs also offer the opportunity to work in placements getting real world experience in local industries.
The exact curriculum and program structure of each information technology program will differ depending on the university you’re attending. Each program will include a number of core modules you must study, and electives you can choose from. Some common modules you’ll study include:
- Computing systems architecture and operating systems
- Information security and cybercrime
- Software development
- Database systems and big data
- Web programming
- IT in organizations
- Quantum computing
- Advanced analytics
