General Science program structure
A bachelor’s degree in general science is studied over three or four years, depending on your country and university. General science is an impressive standalone degree, but it’s also a great springboard for further study on professional graduate programs.
Bachelor’s degrees in the US require four years of full-time study and are offered as either a BS or a BA. As a general rule of thumb, BS students take more major-focused classes in science, whereas BA students complete more liberal arts classes alongside their major.
Because general science is such a far-reaching topic, master’s and doctorate degrees aren’t available. You’ll need to narrow your focus and pursue a postgraduate qualification in a more specialized scientific discipline. Master’s courses take one or two years to complete, with PhDs adding another three to seven years on top.
General science programs are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical workshops, and laboratory sessions. Program content will be determined by the elective modules you select, but here are some common fundamentals:
- Introductory biology
- Introductory chemistry
- Introductory physics
- Environmental science
- Immunology
- Mathematical and statistical skills for scientists
- Astronomy and space science
- Forensic science
- Microbiology
