Real Estate degrees abroad

Real estate refers to the management and sale of land and property. It encompasses elements of finance, accounting, business administration, insurance, and economics.

By enrolling in a real estate program, you’ll develop the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to begin a successful career in the field. You’ll study every aspect of real estate management, from law, investment, and valuation, through to planning and construction. You’ll also gain a sound understanding of the different types of real estate: residential, commercial, industrial, and vacant land.

Real estate is a fast-growing global business. By earning your degree abroad, you’ll see how the principles and practices of real estate differ from country to country. The experience you’ll gain from operating in foreign markets and liaising with new networks of stakeholders will be invaluable.

Real Estate program structure

Bachelor’s degrees in real estate are studied over a minimum of three years. However, most universities around the world encourage students to complete an additional 12-month industry placement so they can gather hands-on experience. Therefore, BSc programs normally last at least four years.

If you’ve got your heart set on studying in the US, you’ll probably select real estate as your major. All undergraduate degrees in the American liberal arts system require four years of full-time study. You’ll spend the first two years of your program taking general education classes, before concentrating on real estate modules in the final half of your degree.

Once you’ve finished your undergraduate degree, you can choose to enroll in a postgraduate program. Master’s programs in real estate can be studied over one or two years, followed by a PhD, which normally lasts between four and seven years.

Teaching methods typically include lectures, seminars, workshops, and field trips. It’s also common for industry professionals to deliver guest presentations. Your progress will be assessed through exams, essays, presentations, class tests, research tasks, and group projects.

Every real estate program will be slightly different, depending on the specialisms of lecturers and the elective modules on offer. However, most courses will address these key areas:

  • Building design and construction
  • Economics of the built environment
  • Real estate law
  • Property management and professional practice
  • Introduction to valuation
  • Land law
  • Real estate investment
  • Planning law and practice
