Quantity Surveying degrees abroad

By studying a degree in quantity surveying, you’ll learn all about the financial management of construction projects, including the concept, design, build and maintenance. As a qualified quantity surveyor, you’ll be in demand around the world and play a vital role in deciding whether building projects are viable.

You’ll explore the scientific, social, legal, economic and political aspects of the built environment, and get to grips with issues such as value for money and health and safety. Quantity surveying is an ideal program for problem solvers with an analytical mind.

It’s possible to study quantity surveying abroad in a number of countries like the UK, South Africa and Malaysia. Most programs will be accredited by that country’s governing body, for example, programs accredited by the RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) allow you to work in the UK, but may not let you work in other countries.

Quantity Surveying program structure

You can study quantity surveying as a diploma, certificate, bachelor’s or master’s degree. Which option is right for you will depend on your previous education and career aspirations. Bachelor’s are available as a BSc and are usually taught over three or four years, or you can study an MSc in quantity surveying over two years.

Many bachelor’s programs offer an internship year, sometimes referred to as a sandwich year, which means you get to work in the industry. You’ll be able to put what you’ve learned into practice while earning a wage and gaining valuable experience.

Most quantity surveying programs are taught through lectures, seminars and workshops, and many will include field trips and regular site visits. You’ll be assessed through a range of methods to measure your progress, including exams, assignments, presentations, practical work and group work.

What’s covered in the program content will differ depending on where you’re studying, and the requirements of the country’s governing body. However, there are a number of core modules and subjects that most courses will cover, including:
