Interior Design degrees abroad

Studying for a degree abroad in interior design is possible all over the world. It can have a focus or specialism in areas such as residential and commercial, and may also include aspects of architecture and design.

Completing an interior design degree abroad can give you the practical and theoretical experience to become an interior designer, either for a company, or to set up your own company. Building a portfolio of work while studying is crucial to show what you’ve learnt and how you can help future employers and clients. Studying interior design abroad will introduce you to new techniques and trends, including those from the local culture.

You may also find that studying abroad gives you a wider option of universities to choose from with better work experience placements or facilities to make use of.

Interior Design program structure

Interior design can be studied at bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate levels, however this will depend on the exact country you study in. At undergraduate level you may be more likely to find interior design degrees in parts of Europe than say the US. You may find that you can only study interior design at bachelor’s level by dedicating a certain amount of credits to its study, rather than a bachelor’s degree in its own right.

A master’s or professional doctorate in design will cover interior design as your specialism.

As part of any level of interior design degree, a large proportion of how you are assessed will involve a portfolio of work, or projects where you showcase your knowledge and talent. You will also have essays alongside any practical work to illustrate your theoretical application, as well as your creative process. It’s likely that you will be assessed on separate essays to cover specific themes, styles or artists in some modules.

Interior design degrees open up a lot of opportunity for cross-collaboration with other students who are studying for different art and design degrees.

Many interior design programs will be made up of modules covering topics such as:
