Multimedia program structure

You can study a multimedia degree at a range of levels including undergraduate and postgraduate. At undergraduate level, foundation or diploma degrees are available, which usually last a year. These programs are ideal if you need extra qualifications to get onto a bachelor’s program, or if you’re looking to start entry-level employment in a multimedia career.

At the bachelor’s level, most multimedia programs are available as a BA qualification, but some offer a BSc qualification. This will usually depend on the precise focus and make-up of the program, for example, a design focussed course may be offered as a BSc.

Bachelor’s programs usually last three or four years of full-time study. If you choose to study in the US, you’ll study over four years and have the opportunity to learn a range of subjects before declaring your major in multimedia.

If you already have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, you can choose to study a master’s program. These are designed to further develop your skills and knowledge, often in a more specific area than your bachelor’s. A master’s program usually takes one or two years to complete, and you will be expected to do more independent research.

Multimedia programs cover a diverse range of topics and skills, so you can expect to learn through a variety of methods including lectures, workshops, seminars, and practical sessions. Assessment will vary for each module you take, but you’ll likely face project work, essays, exams, and often a portfolio of your work.

The programs structure and content will vary a lot depending on the exact title of your multimedia program, but here are some common modules most courses will cover:

  • Digital content creation
  • Graphic design
  • Web development
  • Media, journalism, and society
  • Media law
  • Communication research methods
  • Multimedia storytelling
  • Digital and internet policy
