Fine art degrees abroad
Studying for a fine art degree can have a focus on a category of art such as visual arts, decorative arts or graphic arts. Your degree could be in one subject area specifically such as photography, painting, sculpture, or film-making, or may include a number of practices.
Completing a fine art degree abroad can give you artistic inspiration from your new surroundings, and a new culture from which to view art. By understanding a different part of the world you will experience new techniques, artists and trends which may not be commonplace in your home country.
You may also find that studying abroad gives you a wider option of universities to choose from with improved facilities and equipment for producing your art.

Fine art program structure
Fine art degrees can be studied all over the world. In some countries you can study for a fine art degree at bachelor’s (BFA), master’s (MFA) and doctorate levels. In other countries you may study fine art as a major of your undergraduate degree by dedicating a certain amount of credits to its study.
You may need a foundation degree in art to apply to some fine art programs.
As part of any level of fine art degree a large proportion of how you are assessed will involve a portfolio of work, or multiple projects where you showcase your creative art. You may also have essays alongside any practical work to explain your creative process, as well as separate essays on specific themes, styles or artists.
Fine arts degrees don’t only require solo work however, and you can often be involved in group work, either to discuss theory or collaborate on projects. You will also find opportunities to work cross-collaboratively with students who are studying for different degrees or subjects.
It’s common for international students to study fine art in Europe and the UK due to their reputation for educational excellence as well as state of the art facilities. However, across the world you will find many fine art degrees that cover the following subjects in modules:
- New media
- Studio practice
- Technique
- Aesthetics
- Materials
- Art theory
- Research
- Portfolio work
