An in-depth guide to studying actuarial mathematics as an international student.

Actuarial mathematics degrees abroad

Actuarial mathematics students learn how to assess financial risk and uncertainty by applying mathematical methods and techniques.

Alongside sharpening your skills in statistics and probability, you’ll develop a sound understanding of risk theory, microeconomics, and macroeconomics. Upon graduating, you’ll be ready to begin a fast-paced and successful career in areas like banking, insurance, and financial management.

Taking your degree overseas is an invaluable opportunity to learn about financial and insurance markets around the world. You’ll network with international professionals, boost your employability, and make lifelong friends.

Actuarial mathematics program structure

Bachelor’s degrees in actuarial mathematics require at least three years of study. However, most programs give you the opportunity to spend a year on placement, taking your overall course length to four years. Industry placements are an unbeatable way to build your professional skills and apply what you’ve learned so far.

If you opt to study in the US, your undergraduate degree will last for a minimum of four years. Before selecting a major in actuarial mathematics at the end of your second year, you’ll take a mixture of liberal arts classes.

It’s possible to take your education further and pursue a postgraduate qualification. Master’s degrees take one or two years to finish, while PhDs add another four to six years to your studies.

Programs combine theoretical lectures, seminars, and tutorials with practical problem classes, computer labs, and workshops. Assessment methods vary between modules, but formal exams, in-class tests, and project work will feature.

The topics covered on actuarial mathematics programs differ from university to university, but most institutions deliver classes in these fundamentals:

  • Financial accounting and reporting
