Statistics degrees abroad
Statistics is a branch of mathematics concerned with the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data. Businesses and organizations rely on statistical findings to make informed decisions about strategy and direction.
A degree in statistics will equip you with the skills and knowledge that you need to become an accurate and successful statistician. You’ll learn about various mathematical and computing techniques, get to grips with new theories, study several models, and apply statistical procedures and principles to process information.
Mathematics is a global language, making statistics an excellent subject to study anywhere in the world. You’ll gain a global understanding of the field, learn from international experts, establish professional connections with multinational companies, and take your employability to the next level.

Statistics program structure
You can study statistics as an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree. An associate degree usually lasts for two years and will give you a solid grounding in the subject. It’ll help to prepare you for entry-level employment or further study on a bachelor’s program.
A BSc in statistics is the most popular program among undergraduate students. You’ll study for a minimum of three years, but some courses may last up to four years depending on your university and whether you complete a placement year.
A statistics major in the US will last at least four years. You’ll focus on your general education for your first two years of study, before concentrating on statistics-specific modules in the final half of your degree.
If you’re interested in gaining a postgraduate qualification, you can study a master’s in statistics over one or two years, followed by a PhD which takes roughly five years to finish.
Statistics degrees are mostly taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, laboratories, workshops, and tutorials. You’ll likely be assessed through exams, coursework, group projects, and presentations.
What’s covered on your statistics degree will vary from university to university. You’ll probably be asked to select from a range of elective modules, but you can expect to encounter these core areas of study as well:
- Algebra
- Calculus
- Number theory
- Probability theory
- Game theory
- Data collection and sampling methods
- Statistical modeling
- Decision modeling
