"French, Francophone ​ and Italian studies ensure that our students succeed in today's global economy - our department offers classes on language, literature, and culture from elementary language courses in French and Italian, to major and minor-level courses in French and Italian, to advanced graduate seminars at the M.A. and Ph.D. level in French.


In our department, students work closely with nationally- and internationally-renowned scholars. Our faculty members have won national awards that recognize excellence in research, including a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, an American Philosophical Society Franklin Research Grant, and a Newberry Library Fellowship, among many others. Our faculty members have also received major research funding from the University of Kansas, including Hall Center for the Humanities Research Fellowships and Keeler Intra-University Fellowships for interdisciplinary work. Undergraduate students can work one-on-one with faculty mentors in the Honors Program, McNair Scholars Program, and the Dean’s Scholars Program."

Undergraduate academic requirements

  • A minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for all previous coursework, including transfer coursework.

English requirements

  • TOEFL iBT: 79 (18 minimum subscore)
  • TOEFL PBT: 60 (18 minimum subscore)
  • IELTS: 6.5 (6.0 minimum subscore)

  • Earned a B or better in College English Composition 1 and 2 and earned 24 or more credit hours toward a degree at an institution in a qualifying region listed above
  • Completed the full IB diploma program with an English HL of 5 or higher
  • Earned an associate's degree with a 2.5+ GPA from a U.S.-accredited post-secondary college
