Molecular Biology degrees abroad

Molecular biology is the study of macromolecules and the macromolecular mechanisms found in living things. It’s an exciting and vital subject that has led to advancements in areas of medicine, agriculture and biotechnology.

As a molecular biology student, you’ll focus on the structure and function of biologically important molecules. You’ll also learn about DNA, RNA, and proteins and explore other important areas like biochemistry, genetics and cell biology.

As an international student, you could study molecular biology all over the world in countries such as the UK, USA, Canada and Turkey. Choosing to study abroad means accessing facilities and technologies that you might not see in your home country, and getting to choose from some of the best programs in the world.

Molecular Biology program structure

At the undergraduate level most universities offer molecular biology as a BSc program which can take three or four years to complete. Some universities offer an MBiol (Master of Biology) qualification that is available at the undergraduate level that combines a bachelor’s and master’s program and takes an extra year to complete.

Many universities offer molecular biology programs that are combined with another subject, like cellular biology or genetics. These programs are worth considering if you want to study a broader range of topics.

If you already have a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology or something similar, you can study an MSc over one or two years. PhD programs in molecular biology are also available and will involve between three and six years of unique research and a doctoral dissertation.

Teaching on most molecular biology programs will include theoretical sessions in lectures and seminars, and practical workshops and laboratory-based classes. Assessment will vary between modules, but you can expect to complete essays, written exams, research projects and practical assignments.

Exactly what modules you’ll study will depend on your university and the electives you choose, but some of the most common core subjects include:

  • Biochemistry
  • Genetics
  • Cell biology and evolution
  • Microbiology
  • Laboratory and research skills
  • Human physiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Biology of disease
