Human Biology degrees abroad

Human biology is a fascinating field that puts human bodies and their processes under the microscope. Human biologists are at the forefront of exciting discoveries in human health and development.

You’ll examine the structure and function of the human body and consider how human populations have evolved throughout history. As well as exploring how genetics, disease and unhealthy lifestyles threaten the body, you’ll look at how these risks can be treated or reduced.

Human life exists in every corner of the world, making human biology the perfect program to study abroad. You’ll see how societies across the globe face different biological and cultural health hazards, like aging populations, poor nutrition, pollution, and drug misuse. The new approaches, procedures, and methods you encounter will take your learning to the next level.

Human Biology program structure

At the undergraduate level, you can study human biology as a bachelor’s degree. To achieve a BSc, you’ll need to complete at least three years of study. However, some courses will integrate an optional 12-month industry placement, taking the length of your program to four years.

If the US study abroad experience has caught your eye, you’ll spend four years working towards your undergraduate degree. You’ll follow a core curriculum in the liberal arts for the first two years, before committing to a human biology major for the final half of your program.

After finishing your bachelor’s, you can begin a research-focused postgraduate course. A master’s in human biology normally takes one year of full-time work, or two years if you study part-time. A PhD is the highest formal qualification available and usually takes five or six years to complete.

To develop a solid understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of human biology, you’ll be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory work and hands-on sessions.

The exact content of your course will depend on the university, country, and elective modules you choose. However, most programs will cover these key topics:

  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Genetics and molecular biology
  • Human evolution and adaptation
  • Biological research skills
  • Human growth and development
  • Cell biology
  • Cellular disease
