Information Security degrees abroad

As the globe becomes increasingly digitized, safeguarding digital information from security threats has never been more important. By enrolling in an information security program, you’ll learn how to safely store, protect, and transmit data.

You’ll take classes in everything from cryptography and network security, to cyber law, and software development. You’ll analyze specific threats like software corruption, fraud, hacking, and terrorism, before considering how they can be managed and eradicated.

Businesses, organizations, and governments exchange huge quantities of digital information at the international level every day. By studying abroad, you’ll appreciate the sophistication of global communications systems, as well as seeing first-hand how threats to electronic data are managed around the world.

Information Security program structure

You can study a BSc in information security over three years, or four years if you participate in a 12-month placement. Sandwich years are one of the best ways to consolidate your knowledge, gain industry insight, and build your professional skills.

If you opt to pursue your bachelor’s in the US, you’ll follow the four-year liberal arts model. This means completing two years of general education, before majoring in information security at the end of your second year.

Master’s degrees in information security are widely available and extremely popular amongst students looking to take their knowledge and employability to the next level. They typically take one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.

You can take your education further still by completing a doctorate degree. These research-focused programs usually take between four and six years to finish.

Information security programs blend theoretical lectures, seminars, and tutorials with practical laboratories and workshops. While no two programs cover exactly the same content, most universities will introduce students to the following core units:

  • Introduction to information security
  • Information security risk assessment and management
  • Cryptography and security mechanisms
  • Computer and operating systems security
  • Security technologies and software
  • Digital forensics
  • Security testing
  • Cyber law and ethics
