Drawing program structure
Bachelor’s degrees in drawing are normally delivered as three-year BA programs. However, students hoping to study in the US or Canada can earn a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree. These four-year programs have a more professional focus and include fewer of the general education models typically found in liberal arts courses.
After finishing your bachelor’s program, you can dive into a postgraduate program. MA programs require at least one year of full-time study, whereas master of fine arts (MFA) degrees typically last between 21 and 24 months.
It’s possible to study a master of philosophy (MPhil) or PhD in drawing, but these are only available at a handful of universities. These research-based programs can last anywhere between three and six years.
Most of your contact hours will be spent in taught drawing sessions, lectures, practical workshops, and discussion-based seminars. Many universities also arrange learning opportunities outside of the studio, including visits to galleries and guest presentations from industry professionals.
The drawing programs offered by universities will be influenced by local art history, culture, and trends. Having said that, most institutions cover the following topics as part of their courses:
- Drawing skills
- Introduction to visual culture
- Theories and methodologies of drawing
- Critical and contextual practice
- Exploring drawing media
- Developing a personal approach to drawing
- Contemporary drawing
- Drawing throughout history
