Mathematics degrees abroad

Mathematics is the study and application of numbers, shapes and patterns. It is a truly international subject which is taught in almost every country across the world.

Mathematics is a highly respected program that is renowned for opening doors into the world of work and further study. As a math student, you’ll study core concepts and theorems, as well as having the opportunity to specialize in areas that most interest you like statistics, topology, and geometry.

Mathematics is a universal language which makes it a great subject to study abroad. Not only will you enrich your mathematical knowledge, but you’ll also get to experience new cultures, form new friendships and improve your employability.

Mathematics program structure

Mathematics can be studied at associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate levels across the world. Some institutions also offer a Bachelor of Mathematics (BMath) degree, but there is very little difference between this program and a regular BA or BSc.

In the US liberal arts model, you would focus on mathematics as a major or minor component of your bachelor’s degree. This means that a certain amount of time would be set aside for math-specific classes and study, alongside your general education.

Mathematics is often studied alongside another subject, such as economics, business, or finance, as part of a joint-honours course.

Most mathematics courses will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials. You will be assessed mostly through exams, but coursework and group presentations may also feature.

While your course structure and content will depend on your institution and country of study, you can expect to find the following core modules in most mathematics programs:

  • Algebra
  • Calculus
  • Statistics
  • Number theory
  • Game theory
  • Topology
