Agricultural Sciences degrees abroad

Agricultural science is the theoretical study and practical application of farming principles and processes. It’s a multidisciplinary field that encompasses elements of biology, chemistry, environmental science, economics, and business.

As well as building a solid foundation in the science that underpins modern-day farming techniques, you’ll develop the business and management acumen needed to sow success in the field. You’ll take classes in everything from plant physiology and livestock management, to environmental sustainability and public policy.

Studying abroad is an invaluable opportunity to learn about agriculture in a globalized environment. You’ll see how different climates and landscapes affect farming practices around the world, and appreciate the impact of these factors on international food production and supply chains.

Agricultural Sciences program structure

Although it’s possible to study a two-year associate’s degree in agricultural science, it’s much more common for the program to be offered as a bachelor’s degree.

A BSc normally takes three years to finish, but your course will be extended if you complete an optional placement year. Industrial placements, which normally take place between your second and final year of study, are a great chance to put what you’ve learned into practice and gain real-world experience.

If you’re still hungry to learn more about agricultural science, you can pursue a postgraduate qualification. Master’s degrees take up to two years to complete, depending on whether you study as a full or part-time student. A research-oriented PhD will generally take between four and six years of additional study.

As well as attending a mixture of lectures, seminars, and tutorials, you’ll learn through a variety of practical methods too. Farming classes, laboratories, and field trips to agribusinesses are just a few of the hands-on educational experiences you’ll encounter.

Agricultural science is a vast discipline, so it’s easy to customize your degree with elective modules that fit your interests. That said, most universities will deliver core units in the following fundamentals:

  • The agricultural industry
  • Livestock production systems
  • Livestock anatomy and physiology
  • Crop production systems
  • Plants and soil science
  • Principles of reproduction and genetics
  • Challenges in agriculture today
  • Agricultural policy and legislation
