Taxation degrees abroad

Taxation programs provide students with a detailed understanding of the principles and processes of taxation. It’s an interdisciplinary field that merges together concepts from business, finance, economics, public administration, and politics.

As well as learning about various taxation policies, you’ll become confident at applying them to real-world scenarios. You’ll develop the technical, analytical, and professional skills needed to make financial decisions in the interests of individual clients and companies. You’ll also become an expert at interpreting financial data and using it to inform your practice.

With taxation rates and regulations differing so much within and between countries, gaining an international understanding of the field has never been more important. Studying abroad is a priceless opportunity to expand your knowledge, network with potential clients, and broaden your cultural horizons.

Taxation program structure

It’s possible to study a bachelor’s degree in taxation, but these are offered at a limited number of institutions. A BSc requires at least three years of full-time study, but some students extend their program to four years by completing an optional placement year.

If you decide to pursue your studies in the US, you’ll declare a major in taxation. After taking two years of general education classes, you’ll study major-specific modules for another two years.

Degrees in taxation are most widely available at the master’s level. To be eligible for enrollment in an MSc program, you’ll need to have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject like business administration, finance, or accounting. Master’s courses typically take one year of full-time study or two years of part-time learning.

A PhD is the most advanced qualification available to taxation students. Doctorate programs can take anywhere between three and seven years to finish.

Taxation programs are normally delivered through a range of traditional teaching methods, like lectures, seminars, workshops, and tutorials. Assessment methods vary between modules, but the majority of students will complete exams, essays, reports, and presentations.

Each country has different laws and regulations regarding taxation, so the content of your program will be influenced by the location of your university and its cultural context. However, most programs around the world will provide students with a solid grounding in the following:

  • General taxes
  • Corporate taxation
  • Financial statement analysis
  • Estate planning
  • Tax filing
  • Tax law and ethics
  • International taxation
  • Business law
