Study gender studies abroad

Gender studies is a relatively new and exciting academic field that explores how perceptions of gender shape human behavior and societal norms. It’s an inter-disciplinary subject which draws upon ideas and concepts from other fields, like sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, biology, and law.

You’ll examine definitions of gender and examine how they’ve been constructed and sustained across different countries, cultures, and timeframes. It’s possible to undertake a bachelor’s gender studies program, but tracking one down can be difficult. If you do find a BA at a university that interests you, you’ll study for a minimum of three years and gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject area.

It’s much more common to study a bachelor’s degree in social sciences or humanities, before enrolling in a master’s or a master of research (MRes) degree in gender studies. An MA will involve more taught classes, whereas and MRes is structured around more independent research.

The highest postgraduate degree you can pursue is a PhD. This is an original research project that can take anywhere between four and seven years to complete.

Teaching and assessment of gender studies programs will vary from university to university, but you can expect to attend lectures, seminars, workshops, and tutorials. You’ll probably need to complete exams, essays, presentations, and group projects.
