Pedagogy degrees abroad
Pedagogy is the academic study of teaching theories, methodologies, and practices. By taking a degree in pedagogy, you’ll learn how to promote positive learning outcomes in educational settings.
As a pedagogy student, you’ll develop the confidence and communication skills needed to guide pupils towards personal and academic success. You’ll become familiar with a range of teaching methods, and will learn how and when to implement them. You’ll also develop an understanding of pupils’ learning styles so that you can plan and deliver material that meets their needs.
Studying abroad is an invaluable chance to see how pedagogical approaches, settings, and policies differ between countries. Teaching people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures will transform you into a more effective and empathetic practitioner.

Pedagogy program structure
Bachelor’s programs in pedagogy are studied over three or four years. They’re typically offered as BA degrees, but Bachelor of Education (BEd) programs can be found. BEd degrees permit you to teach immediately after graduating, whereas BA students must complete a postgraduate teaching qualification to gain qualified teaching status.
It’s most common to study pedagogy as a master’s degree over one or two years. To enroll in these programs, you must already have a bachelor’s degree, but not in any specified discipline. In some countries, students will be granted qualified teaching status upon completing a pedagogy MA.
If you’re hoping to dive into some original research and contribute to scholarly discussions, you might consider pursuing a PhD. The length of doctorate degrees depends entirely on your project, but most last between four and six years.
Alongside attending theoretical lectures, seminars, and tutorials, you’ll plan and deliver practical sessions in educational settings. Assessment methods vary depending on the modules you choose, but reflective reports, research papers, presentations, and practical sessions will feature.
Here are some core units that appear in most pedagogy programs:
- Pedagogical theories
- Teaching styles, approaches, and methodologies
- Learning styles and preferences
- Learner-centered teaching
- Contemporary issues and debates in education
- Historical and contemporary perspectives in education
- The critical and self-reflexive practitioner
- Equality, diversity, and inclusivity in education
