Latin degrees abroad

Latin may no longer be actively spoken, but it’s still a useful and fascinating language to learn and study. Studying Latin is a great way to learn about grammar, the origins of other languages, and how they are structured.

As a Latin student, you’ll get to increase your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, enabling you to translate passages of Latin into English. You will read works by a range of authors, and study their literary and social context. You’ll also study non-linguistic subjects too, including classical literature, ancient philosophy, and Roman history.

Choosing to study Latin abroad means you can access the best programs available. Not all universities or countries offer Latin programs, so going to university overseas can be the best way for you to study the subject.

Latin program structure

At undergraduate level, you can study Latin as a BA over three of four years. It is often offered as a joint-honors program alongside another subject, like French, Greek, archeology, modern languages, linguistics or classics.

If you study at a university in the US, you can choose to study Latin as your major concentration. This means you’ll need to complete a certain number of Latin modules alongside other subjects and general studies.

If you already have a bachelor’s degree, you can study an MA in Latin over one or two years. Master’s programs will usually include some taught modules and some research-based modules. Some universities also offer PhD programs in Latin, which are purely based on your own research and can take three to five years to complete.

Latin programs are largely taught through lectures and seminars, but many also include field trips to historic sites. Assessment can be in the form of essays and written assignments, as well as translations and presentations.

The course content and structure will vary depending on the university you choose to study at. Most Latin programs are made up of core modules and elective modules that let you tailor your degree to the areas you’re most interested in. Some common core Latin modules include:

  • Basic Latin
  • Intensive Latin
  • Latin language and literature
  • Latin translation
  • Roman history
  • Ancient philosophy
  • Roman art and culture
