History and government is also commonly known as social studies. The teacher education program combines history, political science, and geography courses and professional education coursework with multiple field experiences in diverse communities.

KU requires non-native English speakers to submit a current test score or other proof of proficiency. For full-time degree coursework, the current minimums include TOEFL iBT 79 with an 18 minimum subscore, or 4.5 with a 4 minimum subscore for tests from January 21, 2026; IELTS Academic 6.5 with a 6.0 minimum subscore; PTE Academic 53 with a 48 minimum subscore; SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 590; ACT English + Reading 48; AP English 4; or B grades in both AS and A level English Language exams. Duolingo scores may be submitted when testing access is limited, but an AEC test is still required.
Proof is not required if the applicant is a native English speaker; completed four years of college-preparatory English and high school in a qualifying English-language region with a 2.5+ GPA
