The Master of Science degree provides students with advanced training in chemistry and the analytical skills needed to process and critique complex chemical information. The program requires a set of core courses encompassing the different disciplines of chemistry. The degree program mainly serves students in four categories: those seeking opportunities in the chemical industry requiring training beyond the baccalaureate level, employed chemists who wish to enhance their career potential, future teachers of high school or community college chemistry, and individuals contemplating more advanced graduate study./r/nBecause of the rapid progress in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry, the department strives to offer a range of courses that cover not only established principles but also recent advances. Through laboratory-based coursework and research opportunities, students are prepared for new developments in experimental methods and instrumentation.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate academic requirements

  • Non-resident or non-California high school graduates with A-G GPA of 3.0 or greater will qualify without needing additional Campus Admission Category values (i.e., 3.0 GPA X 800 = 2,400 points).

Postgraduate academic requirements

  • Have the equivalent of a minimum 2.5 GPA. Some graduate departments have higher GPA requirements.
  • Have the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor's degree. If you were educated outside of the U.S., you must have earned a degree equivalent to a 4-year U.S. Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

English proficiency waivers

Undergraduate TOEFL or IELTS can be waived for applicants who meet English proficiency by coursework as follows:

  • Transferred from a U.S. college with 60 or more semester units with a minimum grade point average of 2.4, and have completed a transfer course in each of the following general education areas with a grade of 2.0 or better

    English composition, speech, critical thinking, and mathematics.

Postgraduate

  • TOEFL or IELTS can be waived for applicants who received a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S. college or university, or an international college or university OR demonstrated 3 years of full-time academic study at a post-secondary level in a country where the language of instruction was English as accepted by Cal State East Bay.
