Business Law degrees abroad

By studying business law, you’ll learn about the laws that govern commerce and occupational practices. It’s a fascinating area of study that prepares you for a fast-paced career as a business legal professional.

You’ll develop a sound understanding of core business laws and the implications of these for companies and individuals. As well as taking foundational courses in ethical business operations, contracts, and litigations, you can choose more specific modules to suit your personal interests and ambitions.

Taking your degree overseas lets you witness international business law in action. Seeing national differences in tax systems and employment laws will provide you with a priceless global perspective of the field.

Business Law program structure

Bachelor’s degrees in business law require at least three years of full-time study, but your course will be extended to four years if you complete a placement.

Undergraduate programs are offered as either a BA or LLB. BA courses have a broader focus because they’re designed for students who don’t necessarily want to become lawyers, while LLB courses are strictly focused on preparing students for the practice of law.

At some institutions, business law is only delivered as a join-honors course. This means you’ll split your learning time between business law and another field. Typical pairings include business management, human relations, diplomacy, and history.

If you want to study business law in the US, it’s best to enroll in a bachelor of business administration (BBA) program with a specific emphasis on business law. Your course will last four years and will include a combination of core business classes, business law courses, and general education modules.

Postgraduate qualifications are available for students who decide to continue with their education. A Master of Laws (LLM) takes up to two years to complete, while a PhD can add another four or five years to your studies.

Modules differ from university to university, but here are some of the fundamental study areas you can expect to encounter:

  • Introduction to legal processes and the practice of law
  • Company law and corporate governance
  • Consumer and commercial law
  • Practical legal skills and ethics
  • Intellectual property law
  • Employment law
  • Law of contract
  • Criminal law
