Secondary Education degrees abroad
Studying secondary education at university can prepare you for a rewarding career in secondary school teaching. It’s possible to study general education programs, or you can study courses that prepare you to teach a specific area or subject, like science, geography or English.
Many programs cover general education topics including professional practice, policy, teaching and learning, alongside the subject you're most passionate about and want to teach. It’s important to remember that when studying abroad you’ll be learning about that country’s education system, which will have a bearing on where you can teach after you graduate.
Studying secondary education abroad is a great option for international students, especially those that want to work overseas. You can choose from a wide range of programs from all over the world, giving you the chance to experience a new culture and study in a country with an excellent education system.

Secondary Education program structure
You can study secondary education focused degrees at most levels of study, including bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate. As part of a US liberal arts bachelor’s degree you can major or minor in secondary education over four years, with the opportunity to study modules in the subject you want to teach.
In the UK you can study secondary education as a BA at undergraduate level, but you will usually also need a PGCE or PGDE qualification to become a teacher.
Postgraduate degrees can be either an MSc or MA master’s qualification depending on what area you want to specialize in, and take two years to complete. PhDs are usually designed for teachers who want to do further research in education. You could also study an EdD (Doctor of Education), which tends to focus on administrative topics, like curriculum and policy.
The program content will depend on the type of degree a university offers, and where you’re studying. Many qualifications only allow you to teach in a specific country and even state, so you need to know exactly which program is right for you before applying.
Secondary education programs will include a lot of time in placements in local schools where you can get real hands-on experience working in the classroom. The course content and modules you’ll study will depend on a number of factors, but common subjects include:
- Issues in education
- Subject specific pedagogy
- Professional practice
- Understanding classrooms
- Diversity in education

- Secondary school teacher
- Special education teacher
- Personal tutor
- Support teacher
- Education inspector
- Education welfare officer

Make sure you check to see what qualifications you need for the career you want. Some education programs will not qualify you directly to become a teacher, and you may need to get additional qualifications to teach.
