Project management degrees abroad

Project managers are responsible for overseeing large projects and making sure they run smoothly. It’s a discipline that blends elements of business, human resources, leadership, marketing, and economics.

By studying project management, you’ll be equipped with the tools needed to deliver successful projects across a range of industries. You’ll learn how to delegate tasks, manage budgets, communicate with stakeholders, meet deadlines, and accomplish targets. You’ll also develop the skills needed to assess risk, overcome challenges, and learn from mistakes.

The demand for qualified project managers to oversee tasks in every corner of the globe is increasing. By studying abroad, you’ll hone many of the key traits needed by project managers, including organization, adaptability, and confidence. You’ll also learn from, and network with, international professionals, helping to boost your employability.

Project management program structure

Project management can be studied at several levels, including certificate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate. A certificate degree is an introductory program that usually takes a year or so to complete. They’re useful springboards into entry-level employment or further study.

Bachelor’s degrees in project management are studied over three or four years and can be offered as either a BA or BSc. The courses will cover largely the same content, but you’ll be expected to study more scientific and analytical modules on a BSc course. Most undergraduate degrees will be accredited by a professional body of project managers, but exactly which one will depend on the country and university.

The most common route into project management is to complete a bachelor’s degree in a subject like business, marketing, or engineering, before going on to earn a specialist master’s degree in project management. These postgraduate programs typically take one or two years to complete, depending on whether you study on a full-time or part-time basis. If you’re interested in undertaking further research or lecturing in project management, you might want to consider studying a PhD over an average of five years. Project management programs are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, group workshops, role-play simulations, case study analyses, and tutorials. Most universities will also encourage you to take a placement year during your studies so that you can apply your theoretical knowledge and gain hands-on industry experience.

Although the exact content of your project management degree will vary slightly from university to university, most programs will cover these core areas:

  • Principles of project management
  • Technologies for project management
  • Project planning
  • Cost management and budgeting
  • Risk assessment and management
  • Managing stakeholders
  • Scheduling and time management
  • Human resources management
