Medical Sciences degrees abroad

Medical science is the study of human health. It’s a subject that examines the biological evidence behind contemporary medicine and treatment, as well as researching future cures.

As a medical sciences student, you’ll develop a detailed understanding of how a healthy human body should work. You’ll look at how disease and trauma can threaten the body, and at how medical issues can be resolved.

Disease prevalence, medical treatment, and healthcare systems vary widely throughout the world. By studying medical sciences abroad, you’ll see the field through a global lens, providing you with a broader and more comprehensive understanding. Alongside improving your knowledge, you’ll travel the world, meet international experts, and forge fantastic friendships.

Medical Sciences program structure

Medical sciences can be studied at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A bachelor’s in medical sciences will take between three and four years to complete, depending on the university. You can also choose to study medical sciences as a master’s or PhD, and these take one to two years and four to seven years respectively.

It’s important to remember that none of the above programs will qualify you to practice medicine. However, they can open doors to plenty of careers, as well as postgraduate degrees in medicine, dentistry, veterinary practice, and physiotherapy.

Medical sciences programs are usually taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and practical lab sessions. Some programs will also require you to complete work-based learning in local hospitals. The assessment of most programs includes written exams, coursework, reports, presentations, and, sometimes, clinical examinations.

The modules that you’ll study as part of your program will depend on the university you choose to attend. Although they’ll vary between institutions, here are some of the topics you can expect to encounter:

  • Fundamental skills of medical scientists
  • Human cells
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Principles of medical science research
  • Introduction to clinical practice
  • Genetics and evolution
  • Biochemistry
