Media communication degrees abroad
Media communication examines the technologies, practices, and policies that drive modern communications. It is ideal for students who want to improve their media skills, in order to forge an exciting and creative career within one of the many media industries.
As a media communications student, you’ll study a combination of theory, production, and research-based modules. You’ll also get the chance to develop your enterprise, critical thinking and writing skills, and gain knowledge across areas like digital media, moving image, photography, and podcasting.
As the world becomes increasingly connected, how we communicate through media has never been more important. By studying abroad, you’ll gain a unique and valuable insight into how different countries and cultures communicate, enriching both your academic and personal experience.

Media communication program structure
Media communication (often called media communications) is available to study at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Most bachelor’s programs are offered as a BA qualification and require three or four years of study, depending on the program and destination you choose.
If you decide to study in the US, your media communication degree will last four years using the liberal arts model. This usually means you’ll take general study subjects in the first couple of years, before declaring your major and focussing on media communication modules in your final two years.
If you already hold a bachelor’s degree and want to learn more or advance your career prospects, you can study for an MA in media communication. These programs can be taught or research-based, and require one or two years of study.
As a media communication student, you’ll spend your time in a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and group workshops. Assessment methods will differ for each module you take, but you’ll probably face essays, projects and written exams, with a research-based dissertation in your final year.
The program content you’ll study will be unique to the curriculum of the university you choose to attend, but some of the subjects and modules most will cover include:
- Digital media
- Communication in context
- Media technology
- Global communication
- Marketing and advertising
- Strategic communication
- Public relations
