Life sciences degrees abroad
As a life sciences student, you’ll learn about the life processes, structures, and functions of living organisms. It’s the perfect option if you’re looking to combine your diverse scientific interests into one degree.
During your course, you’ll investigate a vast array of scientific topics, including biology, chemistry, toxicology, and environmental science. You’ll develop the laboratory skills needed to work in scientific settings, and engage with cutting-edge research taking place in the field.
Our planet is teeming with life and there’s so much of it to explore. Studying abroad is a terrific opportunity to encounter new animals, plants, and habitats, and learn from world-leading scientists at the same time.

Life sciences program structure
Bachelor’s degrees in life sciences can be studied over three years full-time or four years with an industry placement. Placements are an unbeatable way to gather hands-on experience and sample possible careers.
If you’ve set your sights on gaining a US college degree, you’ll also study over four years. You’ll complete two years of liberal arts classes before majoring in life sciences for the other half of your program.
You can study a one or two-year master’s degree in life sciences, but you’ll need to narrow your focus and specialize in the topics you’re most passionate about. After finishing your MSc, you can contribute to scholarly research and discussion by pursuing a PhD. A doctorate degree generally takes between four and six years to complete.
As a life sciences student, you’ll benefit from a wide range of teaching methods. As well as traditional lectures, seminars, and tutorials, you’ll attend group workshops, practical laboratories, and field trips.
Life sciences is a highly versatile program, so you’ll have plenty of room to personalize your degree with elective modules. However, here a few of the core units delivered at most universities:
- Fundamental laboratory skills for scientists
- Introduction to biochemistry
- Biodiversity
- Human anatomy and physiology
- Molecular and cellular biology
- Plant biology
- Genes, evolution, and development
- Marine biology
