Landscape Architecture degrees abroad
Landscape architecture is the design of the world outside, from housing developments and urban parks to golf courses, and private gardens. It’s a discipline that combines elements of art, design, ecology, and management, that’s ideal for anyone with a passion for creating engaging outdoor spaces.
As a landscape architecture student, you’ll focus on creating landscapes that are sustainable, and that balance scientific considerations with aesthetics and function. Ensuring that the environment is enhanced rather than damaged by any development is a key consideration of landscape architects.
The design and development of outside spaces is different all over the world. By studying overseas you’ll gain a unique perspective on landscape architecture, seeing a different approach to the subject. You’ll also broaden your personal horizons by experiencing a different culture, while gaining a world-class education.

Landscape Architecture program structure
If you’re an undergraduate looking to study landscape architecture, most programs are available at the bachelor’s level. You can earn a BA, BSc, or a BLA (Bachelor of Landscape Architecture), depending on the university you choose to study at.
In the US most programs are offered as a BLA, which are taught over four years and can be more focussed than other liberal arts programs. There are usually only small differences between BA and BSc programs, for example, a BA may include more art and design modules, and a BSc may focus more on sustainability and science.
If you want to continue your education after achieving your bachelor’s degree, you can study for a master’s in landscape architecture. These are available as an MLArch (Master of Landscape Architecture), or an MA, and require one or two years of study. Although rare, it’s also possible to achieve a PhD in landscape architecture, which will involve three to six years of independent research.
Landscape architecture can be a practical and hands-on program, and your learning will take place in design studies and on field trips, as well as in lectures and seminars. The content and modules you’ll study will be unique to the university you choose, but some of the core subjects most will cover include:
- Sustainable technology
- Historic and contemporary landscapes
- Landscape design
- Cultural contexts of landscape architecture
- Ecology
- Surveying
- Landscape construction
- Green infrastructure
