Study information management abroad

An in-depth guide to studying information management as an international student.

Information management degrees abroad

Information management describes the process of collecting, organizing, storing, and distributing data. It’s a subject that blends together computer science, business, management and information technology.

In today’s digital world, information management systems form the backbone of many business operations. You’ll learn how to design, implement and operate information systems to meet the needs of businesses. As well as developing your practical application skills, you’ll become familiar with the theory underlying the field.

The world of technology is incredibly fast-paced and competitive, with advances being made on a daily basis. Studying overseas an invaluable opportunity to broaden your cultural horizons and immerse yourself in the pioneering developments that are taking place across the globe.

Information management program structure

You can study information management as a bachelor’s degree over a minimum of three years, but four-year courses integrating a sandwich year are also common. Placements allow students to put what they’ve learned into practice and gather crucial industry experience.

If you’re excited by the prospect of studying in the US, you’ll probably know that undergraduate degrees follow the liberal arts model. You’ll take a combination of general education classes and courses specific to your information management major.

Those looking to extend their knowledge and take their employability to the next level will find plenty of excellent master’s and doctoral programs. MSc courses normally last between one and two years, with research-based PhDs adding a few more years on top. Your timetable will blend theoretical and practical-based teaching. You’ll be expected to attend a range of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and laboratories. The modules included in information management programs vary from university to university. That said, most aim to provide students with a solid grounding in these fundamentals:

  • Introduction to information management systems
  • Systems analysis and design
  • New technology and advances in information systems
  • Information security
  • Improving business processes and efficiency
  • Introduction to programming
  • Software engineering
