Environmental Management degrees abroad
Environmental challenges are being faced all over the world, and with an urgent need for action, there’s a growing need for skilled and knowledgable environmental managers.
As an environmental management student, you’ll learn about the core environmental issues affecting the world today like climate change, deforestation, soil erosion and waste management. You will also explore the impact of environmentalism, and study the current policy and legislation designed to tackle the challenges we face.
Studying environmental management abroad could be the ideal option if you’re passionate about the environment and want to understand the global challenges we face. Not only can studying abroad give you a unique perspective on environmental issues, but it’s also a great way to broaden your personal horizons.

Environmental Management program structure
Environmental management programs are available at a range of degree levels. As an undergraduate, you can study for a one-year certificate or two-year diploma, which can prepare you for a bachelor’s program or entry-level employment in environmental management.
Many universities offer environmental management as a BSc program at the bachelor’s level, which can take three or four years to complete. Many programs offer the options of a sandwich year, which will involve a year spent on placement gaining real-world experience.
If you already hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field, you can improve your employability and increase your knowledge by studying for a master’s. A range of master’s qualifications is available depending on where you study, including an MSc, MBA, MRes, or MPhil, which can take one or two years to complete.
PhD programs are also available for those looking to earn a doctoral degree in environmental management. Programs involve between three and six years of independent research, and this is the highest qualification you can achieve.
Environmental management programs combine practice and theory, so you can expect to spend time in both lectures and seminars, as well as in practical sessions and on field trips. The modules you’ll study will vary from university to university, but some of the most common subjects include:
- Sustainability and the environment
- Environmental science
- Ecology
- Conservation
- Physical geography
- Global environmental issues
- Climate change
- Practical and research skills
