Energy Engineering degrees abroad
Finding and maintaining global energy supplies is one of the most urgent issues we face today. By studying a degree in energy engineering, you’ll discover how man-made, natural, and renewable energy sources can be harnessed to keep pace with consumer demand.
You’ll learn about every stage of the energy supply chain, from extraction and production to distribution and use. As well as developing a scientific understanding of energy systems design and operation, you’ll consider how existing processes could become more efficient and sustainable.
Studying abroad is a great chance to see how energy infrastructure and consumption differ within and between countries. You’ll see how foreign governments manage their energy resources through policies and legislation, whilst considering the impact of these practices on global supplies.

Energy Engineering program structure
Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programs last a minimum of three years, but lots of undergraduates choose to complete an industry sandwich year and study over four years instead.
Taking a placement is a fantastic way to apply and consolidate what you’ve learned in the first two years of your program. It can also spark new career interests and improve your employability.
If you’re hoping to study a master’s, you typically have two options to choose from. Some universities offer an integrated bachelor’s and master’s program lasting at least four years. Otherwise, you can enroll in a separate one or two-year MSc program.
Doctoral programs are also available. You’ll undertake original and specific research over several additional years.
Energy engineering courses normally balance theoretical and practical teaching methods. Your timetable is likely to consist of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, and laboratories.
Although program content varies between universities, the list below outlines some of the core classes you’ll be expected to take:
- Energy resource characteristics
- Engineering design and practice
- Engineering principles and analysis
- Sustainable and renewable energies
- Fossil fuels
- Distribution and storage systems
- Mathematics for energy engineering
- Thermofluids
