Digital media degrees abroad

Studying digital media abroad is a great way to be a part of the digital revolution. You’ll learn how to design and create innovative and engaging digital content using the latest technology and industry-standard software.

You’ll get the opportunity to gain a wide range of skills including graphic design, video, digital photography, web design, programming, and mobile app development. You will also learn how to combine these skills with effective research, analysis, and critical thinking to underpin your creative ideas.

Digital media is one of the fastest-growing industries around the world. By studying abroad you’ll get to experience how another country approaches the subject, giving you a global perspective and broader appreciation of how digital media works.

Digital media program structure

At undergraduate level, you can study digital media as a foundation degree, or as a diploma or certificate qualification. These usually last a year and can help you gain entry onto a bachelor’s program, or prepare you for entry-level employment.

At bachelor’s level, digital media is usually offered as a BA, but some universities offer a BSc qualification. There is very little difference between the two, but a BSc program may include more technical modules. Most bachelor’s last three or four years, depending on where you study and if the program includes a sandwich year.

If you already have a bachelor’s in digital media or a related subject, you can expand your knowledge and skills through a postgraduate program. You can study a master’s in digital media as an MA or MSc over one or two years, and these will usually involve some teaching and research.

If you’re looking to achieve a doctorate, you can study a PhD program in digital media or a related subject. These can take four or five years to complete and are entirely based on your own unique research.

Digital media programs teach you a range of skills, so you’ll be taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Assessment will be in the form of essays, exams and often a portfolio of your work.

The content of each program will differ based on a range of factors, but there are some common modules most courses will cover, including:

  • Fundamentals of digital media
  • Digital content creation
  • Graphic design
  • Web development
  • Web and app development
  • Communication research methods
  • Digital storytelling
  • Digital and internet policy
