Computing program structure
Computing degrees can share a lot of similarities with similar programs like computer science or information technology. At many universities computing students will share most classes with students from similar courses, with only a few modules being different.
You can study computing at bachelor’s levels as a BSc, and some universities offer a BEng. The main difference between the qualifications is that a BEng will usually be accredited by an engineering body.
If you study in the US, you can choose to study computing as your major together with general studies and other minor subjects. Bachelor’s typically take three or four years to complete depending on the university or country you’re studying in.
At postgraduate level you can study for an MSc in computing over one or two years, and doctorate level qualifications like PhDs are also available.
The modules and topics covered on a computing program will be different at each university, but here are some common areas you can expect to study:
- Computer networking
- Programming languages
- Software design
- Computer development
- Database design
- Mathematics for computing
- Operating systems
- Business intelligence
