Computing degrees abroad
Computing is a vital part of the modern world, and effective data communication is essential to every organization. It is a highly lucrative and exciting field, and it’s no surprise that computing and computer science degrees are among the most popular for international students to study.
Computing programs will cover current theories, techniques and issues, and aim to give you practical skills needed for you to pursue a related career or further relevant academic study. If you have a passion for computers and data, with an inquiring and analytical mind, a degree in computing could be right for you.
Choosing to study computing overseas means you’ll be able to choose from some of the very best programs in the world. It will show potential employers that you’re able to adapt to new environments and give you a global perspective on the subject.

Computing program structure
Computing degrees can share a lot of similarities with similar programs like computer science or information technology. At many universities computing students will share most classes with students from similar courses, with only a few modules being different.
You can study computing at bachelor’s levels as a BSc, and some universities offer a BEng. The main difference between the qualifications is that a BEng will usually be accredited by an engineering body.
If you study in the US, you can choose to study computing as your major together with general studies and other minor subjects. Bachelor’s typically take three or four years to complete depending on the university or country you’re studying in.
At postgraduate level you can study for an MSc in computing over one or two years, and doctorate level qualifications like PhDs are also available.
The modules and topics covered on a computing program will be different at each university, but here are some common areas you can expect to study:
- Computer networking
- Programming languages
- Software design
- Computer development
- Database design
- Mathematics for computing
- Operating systems
- Business intelligence
