Computer networks have transformed the way we communicate, socialize, work, and trade. By studying a degree in computer networks, you’ll develop the technical knowledge and skills needed to launch a career in this exciting field.
You’ll build a solid understanding of various computer networks, including their structures, functions, and performances. As well as learning about the concepts and theories behind networking, you’ll master your practical skills in areas like programming, routing, and security.
By studying abroad, you’ll learn more about the networking technologies and systems that communities across the globe rely on. You’ll also meet new friends, make professional connections, and give your employability a huge boost.

Computer Networks program structure
Bachelor’s degrees in computer networks last at least three years, but they can take up to four years to finish if you complete a placement year. Placements are a fantastic way to gain hands-on industry experience, and many internships result in graduate job offers.
If you decide to study in the US, you’ll take two years of liberal arts classes before declaring a major in computer networks at the end of your second year. Your total course length will be four years.
If you’re still keen to learn more about computer networks, you can pursue a postgraduate qualification. Some institutions offer integrated bachelor’s and master’s courses lasting four or five years, but most MSc degrees are studied independently over one or two years.
Following this, you might consider enrolling in a research-based PhD course. Doctorate degrees usually take between four and six years to finish.
You’ll be taught through a mixture of lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical workshops, and computer labs. Although module offerings vary between institutions, here are some of the core courses delivered at most universities:
- Introduction to computers and network systems
- Networking essentials
- Principles of network technologies
- Networking and security
- Routing and switching
- System administration and internetworking
- Web applications
- Network servers and services
