Biochemistry program structure
Biochemistry degree programs are available to study at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You can study for a BSc in biochemistry over three or four years, and some universities offer MSci or MBiol programs that add an extra year of study and convert a bachelor’s to a master’s level qualification.
If you already have a bachelor’s degree in a related field and want to continue your studies you can take on an MSc in biochemistry over one or two years. If you want to complete a terminal degree in biochemistry, you can study for a PhD, which usually involves between three and six years of research and study.
Biochemistry can be a challenging course, and will usually involve more contact hours than many other university programs. A lot of your teaching will be through lectures, seminars and practical lab-based workshops. Exams, essays, practical exercises, presentations and coursework will make up a lot of your assessment, but this will differ for each module you take.
The exact program structure and content will be unique to each university, and most courses will be made up of core modules and electives you can choose yourself. Some of the most common biochemistry modules include:
- Evolution and the diversity of life
- Genetics
- Cellular and molecular biology
- General chemistry
- Metabolism
- Research skills
- Pharmacology
- Bioinformatics
- Biotechnology
